TRAVEL TIPS

Etiquette

Although you may find Rome much more informal then many other European cities, Romans will nevertheless appreciate attempts to abide by local etiquette. When entering an establishment, the key words to know are: buongiorno (good morning), buona sera (good evening), and buon pomeriggio (good afternoon). These words can also double as a goodbye upon exit. Remember to avoid short hemlines and sleeveless or low-cut tops in churches. It is common practice (but not obligatory) to leave a tip in a restaurant: usually between 5% and 10% will be appreciated, or just round up. Taxi drivers don't expect tips, but if you round up the tab they will be grateful. Even in bars, leave a small coin for your cappuccino.
