Because of copious traffic lights, it's a 30- to 45-minute drive across town to the far eastside. Because this area is not particularly scenic, you can take I–10 instead (if you're starting from downtown or the west/northwest). During the summer months, plan the outdoor sights for the morning. Note that Colossal Cave stays at a constant cool temperature, which makes it a good option on a warm afternoon.
